The stupid map idea

Right. Woke up Tuesday morning, coffee mug steaming, scrolling through football news on my phone. Saw somebody arguing online about “favorite Premier League stadiums.” People throwing names around like candy. “Anfield!” “Old Trafford!” But then someone just dropped: “Yeah, but WHERE ARE THEY ACTUALLY?” That hit me. Could I actually show people?

Brain went: “Make a map. Obviously.” Simple, right? Ha. Famous last thoughts.

My glorious (messy) battle plan

Okay, step one: figure out what I’m even gonna show. Gotta find every Premier League team. All 20. And find where their stupid homes are.

  • First move: Grabbed my laptop, cracked it open like a walnut. Smashed “Premier League teams 2023/24” into the search thing. Up popped a list. Perfect.
  • Second move: Copied those names down in a note file. Like taking roll call: Man City, Arsenal, Spurs… you know the drill. Even the newbies.
  • Third move: Now, where the heck are these places? Had to find the stadiums. Not just “Liverpool has Anfield.” No. The exact spot where it sits on our big round Earth.

Where the wheels started wobbling

Started searching stadium names one by one. “Emirates Stadium location.” Easy. Pinpointed on a map view. Wrote down the numbers – the latitude and longitude. Looks like someone’s birthday coordinates. Did this for… maybe three stadiums? Tedious.

My dumb head realized: This is gonna take forever. Need a smarter way. So I tried searching the name plus “latitude longitude.” Like a magic spell. “London Stadium coordinates.” Boom! Faster. Sorta. Still took ages. Wanted to strangle the computer a few times.

Building the damn thing (sort of)

Armed with my messy list of teams and their number codes, I needed something free to put them on a map. Found one of those websites where you can create your own points map. Seemed simple enough. Made an account. Poked around the buttons.

Found the button. “Add Marker.” Clicked it. Punched in “Anfield.” Then, slowly, carefully, entered the numbers: 53.430833, -2.960833.Hit save. Held my breath. Did it… work?

A red pin popped up! On the map! Right there in Liverpool! YES! Did a little fist pump. Coffee mug rattled. Felt like a genius. Briefly.

Then reality kicked back in. Only 19 more to go. Sipped my cold coffee. Plodded on. Everton. Goodison Park. Numbers. Pin. Newcastle. St James’ Park. Numbers. Pin. It became a rhythm. Like digging a ditch.

Who knew London had six? SIX! That section of the map looked like someone spilled thumbtacks. Had to zoom way in. Almost poked the screen.

The grand reveal (and why it’s janky)

Finally. The last pin. Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Clicked save. Zoomed out. Stared at this messy map crammed with pins all over England. Some pins kinda overlapped in cities. Looked like ants on a sandwich.

Wanted people to find their favorite. Could they? Maybe? You gotta click the pins to see the team name. It’s not fancy. Didn’t have time or skill for pictures or club badges. Basic as toast. But… you can see where they all live.

Called it: Premier League Stadium Locator. Creative, I know.

Shared it online anyway. Added the title: “Where is your favorite stadium? Check our (totally basic) Premier League team map now!” Figured the word “our” made it sound official. It’s just my janky little project!

Thinking back… lessons learned?

  • Gathering exact coordinates for 20 places? Way more boring than I thought.
  • Free map tools are… fine. If you only need red pins. Don’t expect miracles.
  • London teams are huddled like penguins. Makes the map look silly zoomed out.
  • Next time? Maybe just show the map and ask “Where’s yours?” and let others fight about it!

So yeah. That’s my dumb little map thing. Made it. It exists. Go poke the pins if you want. It’s rougher than a Sunday league pitch, but it kinda works.
