Tottenham vs Arsenal Formation: Why Pochettino Changes Tactics Against Gunners

I was sitting at home watching the Spurs game against Arsenal last night, chewing on my fingernails like always. Noticed something weird right off the bat – Pochettino completely shuffled the formation. Normally we see that solid 4-2-3-1, yeah? But nah, this time it was some kind of wonky 3-5-2 setup. My first thought? “Man’s lost the plot already.”

First Half Madness

So the whistle blows and I’m squinting at the screen. Tottenham’s defenders kept pushing way up, like crazy high line. Saw Sanchez practically playing as a midfielder at times. Then realized our wingbacks Davies and Royal were stuck doing double-duty – chasing Saka/Martinelli one second then trying to whip crosses the next. Looked absolutely gassed by the 30th minute.

Half-time thoughts:

  • Felt nervous seeing Kane drop so deep – like who’s gonna finish chances?
  • Couldn’t believe how much space Arsenal found between our back three
  • Almost spilled my beer when Son got isolated upfront alone

Second Half Tweaks

Poch must’ve seen the disaster brewing too. Around 60th minute he yanks off Davies for Perisic – instant difference. That dude just camped on the left wing firing crosses. Then boom 5 minutes later Kulusevski comes on and suddenly Son has company upfront. Clearest chance came when Deki skins Zinchenko and puts it on Son’s foot… then he skies it over. Typical.

Why The Change Makes Sense (Now)

  • Arsenal’s fullbacks bomb forward like mad – we needed extra wide bodies
  • Three centre-backs meant Saliba couldn’t just bully Kane easily
  • More midfield bodies stopped Odegaard having his usual tea party

Ended 2-2 but honestly should’ve snatched it late. Got me thinking though – Poch ain’t scared to roll the dice against big rivals. Risky? Hell yes. But sitting back gets you murdered these days. Still buzzing from that comeback, nearly woke the baby screaming when Romero headed in. Wife gave me the death stare but worth it!
