tottenham hotspur beanie
Alright so yesterday I got this mad idea to knit a Tottenham beanie since winter’s coming and all my store-bought ones look rubbish. Wanted something proper with the Spurs logo that wouldn’t fall apart after three washes. Grabbed my chunkiest navy yarn and size 8 needles – figured it’d be quick work.
The Absolute Disaster Start
Cast on 72 stitches thinking that’d fit my big head. Knitted five rows of rib stitch before realising the bloody thing wouldn’t stretch over my ears. Yanked it all out like pulling teeth. Swore at the yarn tangled round my coffee mug. Started over with 80 stitches this time.
Logo Nightmare
Right so for the cockerel logo, I tried duplicate stitch embroidery first. Absolute car crash. White yarn kept splitting, ended up with what looked like a sick pigeon. Scrapped that whole bit and switched to intarsia knitting halfway through:
- Had five different yarn bobbins dangling
- Kept crossing colours wrong
- Knitted the beak upside down once
- Tripped over yarn balls twice
Frogged it three times till my hands cramped. Almost chucked the whole thing in the bin when the white yarn snapped.
Finally Got It Together
Took me two full evenings watching match reruns but eventually mashed it together:
- Knitted the body in 2×2 rib
- Made the crown decreases too fast at first – pointy like a wizard hat
- Redid the decreases slower
- Hand-sewed the damn logo after all
Finished by weaving ends while cursing at loose threads. Threw it in the wash praying it wouldn’t unravel.
Real Test This Morning
Wore it to Tesco in proper freezing rain. Wind tried to blow it off but that ribbing clung on tight. Some bloke by the potatoes nodded at it. Been itching to take it off all day but won’t – badge of honour this scrappy thing.
Still got yarn fluff all over my sofa though.
