Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher joins Brentford for £18m transfer fee

English Premier League club Brentford recently officially announced the signing of Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool for a transfer fee of £18 million. The deal marks a new career for Kelleher after years of playing for Liverpool.

Kelleher joined the Liverpool youth system in 2015 when he moved to the Reds from Lin Mahon Rovers, a small club in Ireland. He made his first appearance for Liverpool’s first-team in 2019 and has since played a total of 67 games. He made 10 Premier League appearances last season under new boss Sloter, helping to play a part in the team’s title bid.

Although Kelleher has mainly served as a replacement for star goalkeeper Alisson over the past few years, he has been a consistent performer and has been recognized by the fans and coaching staff. However, with Liverpool planning to bring in Valencia goalkeeper Mamadashvili for £29 million, the competition for the goalkeeper position will become more intense. As a result, Kelleher opted to leave Anfield in search of more playing opportunities.

The transfer also gives Brentford a new starting goalkeeper in their ranks.Previously their main goalkeeper, Flecken, had moved to Leverkusen for a transfer fee of €10 million (about £8.4 million).

In an interview with the media, Keleher had said, “I want to play more in games.I believe I have the ability to be a starting goalkeeper for a team and play every week.I’ve played quite a few games this season, but I’d like to play more.”

The signing of such an experienced goalkeeper is certainly good news for Brentford. They hope that Kelleher can bring more stable defensive performance to the team in the new season and help the team to stand firm in the Premier League.
