My Attempt At Figuring Out What All Those Players Do

Right, so I sat down with my tablet ready to watch Manchester City play Southampton last weekend. Honestly? I didn’t really understand where everyone was supposed to be playing. Felt like just seeing players run around. So I decided to actually try and figure it out myself.

Started super simple. Just picked one player from Man City. I chose Rodri, ’cause he often looks kind of central. Hit play on the recording and literally only watched him for like five whole minutes. Tried ignoring everyone else even when the ball went near them. Felt silly, but okay. I saw him rarely went anywhere near Southampton’s goal box. Mostly hung back in the middle, just in front of our own defenders.

The “Ohhh…” Moment

Then I decided to do the same for Kyle Walker. He stuck mostly to the right side of the pitch. Like, really hugged that touchline. Didn’t see him go near the left at all. He’d sprint forward sometimes when City attacked, then run like mad back down the same right-hand side when Southampton got the ball.

Slowly a picture started forming. I grabbed paper and made a silly drawing:

  • Our Goalie: Obviously stuck near our goal.
  • Two Centre-Backs: Right in front of him most of the time. Then two others wider…
  • Left/Right Defenders: Kinda like Walker! Wider, moving up and down their sides.
  • Rodri Guy: Sitting right in the middle in front of those defenders.
  • Other Midfielders: Around him, but closer to the opponent’s goal.
  • Two Wide Attackers: High up, wide on left and right, causing trouble.
  • The Striker: Usually right in the middle of their penalty area trying to score.

It clicked! So simple when you stop just staring at the ball! It’s about starting positions and their general zones on the field.

Trying The Same With Southampton

Then I watched Southampton. At first, they sat deep, like almost all eleven players near their own box. Felt crowded! They clearly weren’t pushing up much at the start. Later, when they got the ball, one or two players would sprint forwards way quicker than City’s players tracked back. Their positions weren’t as neat as City’s, honestly. Looked harder to figure out, more chasing. Maybe that’s why City had most of the ball?

My Big Takeaway

The biggest thing I realized? Stop following the ball like a zombie! Focus on one player. See where he generally stands when play starts. Where does he mostly run? Left side? Right side? Does he always stay behind teammates? Once you do that for a few different players, the whole thing becomes blindingly obvious. It’s not about fancy tactics, just about seeing who usually patrols which bits of the grass. Like a spider web drawn in chalk. Actually got this wrong for a Southampton player – thought he was a defender, turned out he was a midfielder told to drop deep! See? Practice.
