Everton vs Liverpool Timeline History Top Match Records and Analysis

Started my Everton vs Liverpool project by digging up old match stats, thinking it’d be simple. Wrong. First shocker: official records for pre-2000 matches are messier than a pub floor after derby day. Spent hours cross-checking three different football archives because even basic stuff like attendance numbers didn’t match.

The Timeline Nightmare

Decided to build a year-by-year timeline from 1893 onward. Sounded smart until I hit the 1970s. Found seven different sources claiming seven different kickoff times for the same 1971 match. Ended up using newspaper scans from Liverpool Central Library’s digital collection – my eyes still hurt from squinting at microfilm.

Top Matches Headache

Picking “top matches” caused proper arguments with myself. The 4-4 draw in 1991? Obviously. But 1984 League Cup final? Took me three rewatches and still wasn’t sure. Finally made this chaos:

  • Goal-fests like 1991 (4-4)
  • Red card madness: 2010’s 2-0 with two send-offs
  • Those painful 1-0 grinders that felt bigger than the score

Numbers Don’t Lie (Until They Do)

Tried calculating win percentages like some proper analyst. Big mistake. Everton’s home record looked decent until I noticed five “home” games were actually at neutral grounds during WW2 bomb damage. Spent more time explaining footnotes than actual stats.

In the end, dumped all this into my analysis doc feeling proper drained. Shared it thinking footy fans would love it. Instead got fifty comments arguing whether 1984 or 2012 was the “real” craziest derby. Lesson learned: Merseyside derby history turns everyone into an angry pub pundit.
