Young midfielder Esugo joins Chelsea, grateful for coach’s promotion

The 20-year-old Esugo joined Premier League side Chelsea for £18.5 million in the summer. In a recent interview, he talked about his growing experience, especially thanking his former coach Amorim for his trust and development.

Thanking Amorim for his trust

Esugo said, “I am very grateful to coach Amorim for bringing me to the first team in the first place. He taught me a lot about the game and made me stronger. He always asked us to do our best and give our all to win every game, and that attitude influenced me a lot.”

He also mentioned, “I actually only attended one first team training session before Amorim decided to give me a chance to play.It was totally unexpected. At that time, the epidemic was so serious that matches were suspended and I hardly had a chance to play. And there are great players in the team like Ugarte, Pallinha and Jurmand, who are all top midfielders, and it’s really rare that I get the chance to learn from them.”

What does he think about being compared to famous players?

Asked by a reporter about how people often compare him to some famous midfielders such as Makelele, Essien or Kante, Esugo said, “To be honest, I haven’t watched too much of Makelele’s games, but people say that there are some things about me that are similar to him. They are all very good players and to be compared I think it’s encouraging.”

“I’ve always played in a central midfield position, especially the defensively inclined kind, but I also have the ability to get forward and attack, and want to be a well-rounded player who can defend and attack at the same time.I want to get out of my own way and at the same time learn from my seniors what they have to offer.”

What it’s like to join Chelsea

Talking about why he chose Chelsea, he said, “I was very touched by the fact that Chelsea reached out to my family when they needed help the most. When my dad told me Chelsea wanted to sign me, I didn’t even think about saying no.”

“Now I’m trying to adapt in my new environment and learn from my coach and teammates.Coach Maresca’s tactical philosophy is not quite the same as what I’ve been exposed to before, but I’ve been trying to understand and integrate it.Ravia is a very calm person and I’ve learned a lot from him as well.”

“It’s a whole new platform here and the players are at a very high level.Even though I’ve played before at Sporting Portugal and Las Palmas, where the players are also great, it’s still very exciting to play for Chelsea.”

Overall, Esugo has shown a mature mentality and clear goals despite his young age.He is grateful to those who have helped him in the past and is constantly striving to improve himself in his new surroundings. In the future, he hopes to establish himself in this powerful team and realize his professional dream.
