Man Utd need to bring in 8 new players? Shearer warns Amorim not to rely on Cunha alone
Man Utd have been a huge disappointment to their fans this season, with many going as far as to say it’s been one of the worst years in the club’s history. There are only a few rounds left in the Premier League, but United’s goal tally is alarmingly low, making it hard to believe that this is a team that once dominated England.
Recently, United have been linked with a move for Wolves striker Mateusz Cunha, a Brazilian who has been in fine form this season and is Wolves’ top scorer. However, England football star Alan Shearer has warned new United manager Ruben Amorim not to expect one striker to change the team’s fortunes.
Manchester United’s woes: weak attack, poor results
So far, United have scored just 38 goals in 33 games, one of the worst records in the Premier League era. If performances don’t improve in the final games, the total number of goals scored this season may not be as good as the 2015/16 season (when Van Gaal led the team and scored 49 goals).
In addition to their lack of attacking prowess, United have also underperformed in various cup competitions. They were knocked out of the League Cup by Tottenham Hotspur in the quarterfinals and lost to Fulham in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Such a record makes people worry about the future of the team. Qualifying for next season’s Champions League is out of reach, let alone challenging for the Premier League title.

Cunha has potential, but he’s no panacea
Manchester United are close to signing Mateusz Cunha on a personal contract and are prepared to pay a £62.5 million release fee, according to the Daily Mail. The club are hoping to complete the deal next month.
Ruben Amorim is a big admirer of Cunha, believing that he is technically versatile and can score goals as well as set up his teammates. He was seen talking to Cunha after a game and clearly has a keen interest in the striker. Wolves beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, a game in which Cunha also played well.
However, Alan Shearer believes that signing Cunha will not solve the problem completely. He said: “Even if we sign Cunha, he won’t make a huge difference. United still need six or seven new players, if not more. I understand why they are looking at Cunha, he has talent.
United need to rebuild, it can’t be just one man
Shearer also mentioned that Wolves were winners in the transfer as they extended Cunha’s contract while removing the release clause so they could sell for a higher price. He said: “I think United had to pay quite a lot of money to buy him. But Cunha has strength and personality.
Shearer cited examples of great players who were a bit “overconfident”, such as Cantona or George Best. He himself got into trouble for having too much personality when he was playing football. “It’s actually a very common thing in top-level football.”
Shearer’s main point, however, is that United cannot rely on just one player if they are to become a top team again. He insists that the team must be strengthened in all positions, particularly in midfield and at the back.
United’s problems go far beyond the front line
United’s problems this season are not just in attack. The midfield has been lacking in organization and the defense has been shaky, often allowing the opposition to break through. There have also been some ups and downs in goalkeeping, and overall this team is struggling across the board.
If only one striker is signed and no reinforcements are made in other positions, things may not improve much next season. Shearer’s point is actually a fair one, as he reminds new manager Ruben Amorim that rebuilding the team is a systematic project that can’t be fixed with one or two transfers.
Man Utd fans want new coach to bring change
Despite the poor results, Manchester United still has a huge fan base. The fans are hoping that new manager Ruben Amorim will bring change and lift the team out of the doldrums. But it will take time and the club’s determination and commitment in the transfer market.
The summer transfer window will be an important opportunity, if United can follow Shearer’s suggestion and bring in a number of strong players, coupled with Amorim’s coaching ability, the fans may see hope for next season.
