Wolves vs Man United stats what do we learn from past games

So I was sitting there yesterday, thinking about that Wolves vs Man United match coming up. Figured I’d dig into their past meetings to see if any patterns jumped out. Grabbed my laptop, fired up the football stats sites – you know the ones, full of numbers that make your eyes cross.

Where I started

First thing I did was scroll through their last five Premier League clashes. Wrote down the scores on a sticky note while munching toast crumbs. Kept it simple:

Wolves vs Man United stats what do we learn from past games

  • 2024: Wolves 1 – 3 Man U
  • 2023: Man U 2 – 0 Wolves
  • 2023: Wolves 0 – 2 Man U
  • 2022: Man U 0 – 1 Wolves (whoa!)
  • 2022: Wolves 0 – 1 Man U

Immediately noticed United dominated most matches except that one weird home loss. Made me wonder if Wolves only show up when nobody expects anything from them.

What the numbers screamed at me

Then I got nerdy with team stats tables. The possession percentages shocked me – Wolves actually hogged the ball MORE than United in three of those games! But here’s the kicker:

United consistently needed way fewer shots to score. Like in that 3-1 win last year, they scored three goals from just four decent chances. Ruthless. Meanwhile Wolves would take twelve shots just to put one on target most nights.

My lightbulb moment

Took me a minute to connect the dots. See that 2022 upset where Wolves won at Old Trafford? The stats told the full story: United had 70% possession that day but kept taking pot shots from thirty yards out like they were playing FIFA on amateur mode.

That’s when it clicked – Wolves aren’t bothered about having the ball. They’re happier sitting deep, letting opponents get frustrated, then hitting on the break with those speedy wingers. Works brilliantly when big teams get cocky.

What this means for Saturday

If United come out thinking they’ll just bully Wolves because of the table positions, they’re cooked. Wolves will soak it up and pick them off with counters. But if United stay patient and make their chances count like they usually do? Could be another boring 2-0 snoozefest.

Honestly though? Football’s never that simple. Stats give you clues but then some bloke will trip over the ball and gift a goal. That’s why I’ll be glued to the TV with popcorn instead of my spreadsheet this weekend!
